Bed placement

The largest bed that fits a 10' × 12' room with 24" walkways is a king or California king.

Mattress area and space per sleeper

Length barely changes between sizes; width is what you notice when you share a bed. On a full, two sleepers get 27" each,11 inches less than one sleeper has on a twin. A king gives each of two sleepers the width of a twin.

California king vs king

  • King (76" × 80")
  • California king (72" × 84")
King and California king drawn to scale on the same headboard.

A king is 76" × 80" and a California king is 72" × 84": the California king is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer. They cover almost the same area (42.2 sq ft vs 42.0 sq ft), so the king is only slightly bigger overall.

  • Choose a king for width: each of two sleepers gets 38" instead of 36", which matters more with kids or pets in the bed.
  • Choose a California king if either of you is tall (Casper suggests it for sleepers over 6' 2") or the room is long and narrow.
  • Bedding: fitted sheets are not interchangeable. Flat sheets and duvets can be: Brooklinen sells the same flat sheet (110" × 104") and duvet cover for both sizes. Two king pillows fill a California king's width exactly.

Twin vs twin XL

  • Twin (38" × 75")
  • Twin XL (38" × 80")
Twin and twin XL drawn to scale on the same headboard.

Both are 38 inches wide. A twin is 75" long and a twin XL 80" long, the same length as a queen or king. Casper says a twin fits sleepers under 6 feet and suggests a twin XL above that. Twin XL is a common size in college dorms, and two of them side by side make a split king.

Twin and twin XL fitted sheets are not interchangeable: a twin sheet is 5 inches too short for a twin XL. Duvet covers can be: Brooklinen sells one twin/twin XL size.

Full vs queen

  • Full (54" × 75")
  • Queen (60" × 80")
Full and queen drawn to scale on the same headboard.

A full is 54" × 75" and a queen 60" × 80": 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer, about 19% more area. For one sleeper a full is plenty wide, but at 75 inches it is the same length as a twin, which the Better Sleep Council notes may be too short for some adults. For two, a queen gives each person 30" instead of 27".

Casper's minimum room is 9' × 10' for a full and 10' × 10' for a queen. The fitted sheets differ, but duvet covers can be shared: Brooklinen sells one full/queen size.

King vs queen

  • Queen (60" × 80")
  • King (76" × 80")
Queen and king drawn to scale on the same headboard.

A king is 16 inches wider than a queen (76" vs 60") and the same 80" length, about 27% more area. That takes each of two sleepers from 30" to 38", the width of a twin. The Better Sleep Council calls the queen the most popular size. Casper's minimum room for a queen is 10' × 10', and for a king 12' × 12'.

What size room do you need for each bed?

Mattress makers' minimum room sizes differ. The last two columns are the smallest room that leaves a walkway on both sides and at the foot of the mattress, with the head against a wall.

Walkway sizes: Casper recommends at least 24 inches on each side and at the foot, and says 30 to 36 inches is where a bedroom starts to feel open. If someone in the house uses a wheelchair, 36 inches is the minimum clear width of an accessible route in the 2010 ADA Standards, which also call for a 30" × 48" clear floor space on both sides of the bed in accessible hotel rooms. Room sizes in the table are width (the wall behind the headboard) × depth, and don't include a frame, nightstands or a dresser.

How much bigger is the bed frame?

Casper says frames add 2 to 5 inches around the mattress, and a headboard adds 2 to 4 inches to the length. Its frame sizes for each mattress:

SizeMattressBed frame
Twin38" × 75"38–43" × 77–80"
Twin XL38" × 80"38–43" × 80–83"
Full54" × 75"56–60" × 76–80"

King76" × 80"78–82" × 82–85"

Are all mattresses the same size?

Close, but not exactly. Size guides from Casper, Saatva, Sealy and Tempur-Pedic agree on the twin XL, queen, king and California king. The differences:

  • Full: Saatva and Sealy's size guides list 54" × 75", but the Better Sleep Council and Casper's size chart list 53" × 75", and Tempur-Pedic 53" × 74".
  • Twin: Tempur-Pedic lists 38" × 74" rather than 38" × 75".
  • As built: Sealy publishes the actual dimensions of its mattresses, and most come out half an inch to an inch short of the nominal size: a Sealy queen measures 60" × 79.5" or 60" × 79", and a California king 72" × 83.5" or 72" × 83".

A fitted sheet with some stretch covers these differences. Measure your own mattress before buying a frame or headboard that has to fit it closely.

Split king and split California king

A split king is two twin XL mattresses side by side: 76" × 80" in total, each half about 38" × 80". A split California king is two mattresses about 36" × 84". They let each sleeper choose a different firmness, and suit adjustable bases that raise each side separately. Each half takes its own fitted sheet.

Full XL, Olympic queen and Alaskan king

SizeInchesFeetNotes
Full XL54" × 80"4' 6" × 6' 8"A full with the length of a queen. Puffy notes it can be harder to find in stores than a full.
Olympic queen66" × 80"5' 6" × 6' 8"6 inches wider than a queen. Nectar notes very few manufacturers make it, and bedding is hard to find.
Alaskan king108" × 108"9' × 9'A 9-foot square, the largest size sold without customization. Saatva recommends a room of at least 16' x 16'; Nolah says 15' x 15'.

These are not standard sizes, so sheets and frames are harder to find and dimensions can vary between the few makers that sell them.

Standard pillows suit twin, twin XL and full beds; two queen pillows span a queen exactly, and two king pillows a California king. The pillow size chart shows how many of each fit across every bed.

How this works

  • Sizes are the nominal dimensions in mattress makers' size guides and in the size guide of the Better Sleep Council, which is sponsored by the International Sleep Products Association. Feet and centimeters are converted from inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and rounded.
  • The room tool adds the walkway you choose to both sides and the foot of the bed (or one side and the foot with the bed in a corner), plus any frame allowance, and tries the headboard against either wall. The 24-inch default follows Casper's minimum. Walkway and room-size results are this page's own arithmetic, not a building code.
