Aking mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long: 6 ft 4 in × 6 ft 8 in, or 193 × 203 cm. That is 42.2 sq ft of sleeping space, 38" each for two. Casper's minimum room size for it is 12' x 12'.

Is every king mattress 76" × 80"?

76" × 80" is the size listed by Better Sleep Council, Casper, Saatva, Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic. Some makers list or build it differently:

"As built" sizes are the measurements Sealy publishes for its finished mattresses. A fitted sheet with some stretch covers the difference; measure the mattress itself before ordering a frame or headboard that has to fit it closely.

What size room do you need for a king bed?

  • Casper: at least 12' x 12'
  • Sealy: 10' x 12' to 13' x 13'
  • Saatva: at least 10' x 10'

With the head against a wall and a 24-inch walkway on both sides and at the foot (Casper's minimum), aking mattress needs a room at least 10' 4" wide and 8' 8" deep. For 36-inch walkways, which Casper says feel open and which match the minimum width of a wheelchair-accessible route in the ADA Standards, it needs 12' 4" × 9' 8". Add the frame: Casper lists king frames at 78–82" × 82–85".

The largest bed that fits a 10' × 12' room with 24" walkways is a king or California king.

  • Walkways are measured from the mattress to the wall. Nightstands and dressers take space out of them.

King sheet sizes

Buy sheets labeled king. As an example, Brooklinen's king Classic sheet set measures:

Brooklinen says its fitted sheets fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep, with 12 to 16 inches the best fit. Flat sheet and duvet sizes vary more between brands than fitted sheets do.

What size pillows for a king bed?

Two king pillows (20" x 36") take up 72 of the 76 inches. Two queen pillows also work: Saatva matches king pillows to king beds, and Casper and Saatva match queen pillows to them too.

  • A king vs a queen: the queen is 16 inches narrower and the same length.
  • A king vs a California king: the California king is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer.

Who is a king bed for?

  • Each of two sleepers gets 38 inches, the full width of a twin. The Better Sleep Council calls it the best choice for couples who want maximum personal sleeping space.
  • It is about the size of two twin XLs pushed together, which is how a split king is made.
  • Measure the halls, doors and stairwells it has to pass through before buying, as the Better Sleep Council advises for a king.
