Pillow size chart

Sizes from Casper's and Saatva's pillow size guides, which agree on every size here. Pillowcases use the same names and nominal sizes. Bed pairings follow those guides.

Standard pillow size

A standard pillow is 20" × 26" (51 × 66 cm). Saatva calls standard pillowcases the most common size. One fits a twin or twin XL, and two fit side by side on a full (52 of its 54 inches) or a queen. Casper and Saatva both recommend standard pillows for twin, twin XL and full beds.

Queen pillow size

A queen pillow is 20" × 30" (51 × 76 cm), 4 inches longer than a standard. Two queen pillows measure exactly 60 inches end to end, the width of a queen bed (60"). Casper and Saatva suggest them for queen and king beds.

King pillow size

A king pillow is 20" × 36" (51 × 91 cm), 10 inches longer than a standard. Two king pillows measure 72 inches end to end: exactly the width of a California king (72") and 4 inches short of a king (76"). Saatva suggests king pillows for king and California king beds and notes they may be too big for a queen, where two would overhang by 12 inches.

Standard vs queen pillow

Both are 20 inches wide. The queen is 4 inches longer (30" vs 26"). Saatva says most queen pillows fit into a standard pillowcase, but snugly, and suggests a queen pillowcase instead. On a full bed, two standard pillows fit and two queen pillows (60") would hang over its 54-inch width.

There is also a super standard pillow, 20" × 28", two inches longer than a standard.

Euro pillow size

A euro pillow is a 26" × 26" square (66 × 66 cm). It is mostly decorative, set behind sleeping pillows, or used for back support when sitting up in bed. Euro pillows need a euro-size pillowcase or sham.

Body pillow size

A body pillow is 20" × 54" (51 × 137 cm), long enough to rest your head on one end and tuck the other between your legs. Saatva says it is especially popular with side and back sleepers. At 54 inches it is longer than a twin is wide, so it lies along the bed beside you rather than across the head.

Pillowcase sizes

Pillowcases are sold by pillow size, and some run a little larger than the pillow. Brooklinen's sheet sets, for example, include 20" × 27" pillowcases with twin to queen sets and 20" × 37" cases with king and California king sets. A king pillow will not fit a standard case.

How this works

Pillow and bed sizes are the nominal sizes from mattress and bedding makers' size guides. Counts are how many whole pillows fit across the bed's width without overhanging, with each pillow's long side across the bed. Real pillows vary by an inch or so and change shape with fill.
