Is every twin mattress 38" × 75"?

38" × 75" is the size listed by Better Sleep Council, Casper, Saatva, and Sealy. Some makers list or build it differently:

SourceSize
Tempur-Pedic38" × 74"
Sealy (Cocoon, Posturepedic Spring, Icon)as built38" × 74.5"
Sealy (Posturepedic Hybrid)as built38" × 74"

"As built" sizes are the measurements Sealy publishes for its finished mattresses. A fitted sheet with some stretch covers the difference; measure the mattress itself before ordering a frame or headboard that has to fit it closely.

What size room do you need for a twin bed?

  • Casper: at least 7' x 10'
  • Sealy: 7' x 10'
  • Saatva: at least 7' x 10'

With the head against a wall and a 24-inch walkway on both sides and at the foot (Casper's minimum), atwin mattress needs a room at least 7' 2" wide and 8' 3" deep. For 36-inch walkways, which Casper says feel open and which match the minimum width of a wheelchair-accessible route in the ADA Standards, it needs 9' 2" × 9' 3". Add the frame: Casper lists twin frames at 38–43" × 77–80".

Casper's minimum: walkable but tight.
Bed placement

The largest bed that fits a 10' × 12' room with 24" walkways is a king or California king.

  • A twin leaves 53" on each side and 45" at the foot, with the headboard on one of the long walls. Twin dimensions
  • Walkways are measured from the mattress to the wall. Nightstands and dressers take space out of them.

Twin sheet sizes

Buy sheets labeled twin. As an example, Brooklinen's twin Classic sheet set measures:

PieceSize
Fitted sheet39" × 75", 16" pocket
Flat sheet71" × 98"
Duvet cover64" × 90"
Pillowcases20" × 27"

Brooklinen says its fitted sheets fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep, with 12 to 16 inches the best fit. Flat sheet and duvet sizes vary more between brands than fitted sheets do.

What size pillows for a twin bed?

One standard pillow (20" x 26"). Casper and Saatva both match standard pillows to twin beds.

  • Standard pillow: 20" × 26" (51 × 66 cm)

See the pillow size chart for every pillow size and how many fit across each bed.

Twin XL38" × 80"+7%38" for one
Full54" × 75"+42%54" for one, 27" each for two
  • A twin vs a twin XL: the twin XL is the same width and 5 inches longer.
  • A twin vs a full: the full is 16 inches wider and the same length.

All sizes side by side are in the bed size chart.

Who is a twin bed for?

  • The Better Sleep Council suggests a twin for children who have outgrown a crib, and for a guest bed, daybed or bunk bed in a small room.
  • Casper says the 75-inch length comfortably fits sleepers under 6 feet. Taller sleepers should look at a twin XL.
