Quilt Sizes

Updated October 19, 2026

A twin quilt is 66–68 × 86–88 inches, a full/queen 90–92 × 88–95 and a king 108–110 × 92–95, going by L.L.Bean, Pottery Barn and Parachute. If you're making one, precut batting runs from crib (45 × 60) to king (120 × 120–124). Pick your mattress to see which quilts cover it.

Hang below the mattress

A 12-inch-deep queen (60" × 80") needs a quilt at least 84" × 92" (213 × 234 cm) to reach the bottom of the mattress on both sides and at the foot.

2 of 3 full/queen quilts below cover it. Every brand's king quilts size does.

Quilt size chart

Finished quilts, width × length. Each range runs from the smallest to the largest size that L.L.Bean, Pottery Barn and Parachute sell under that name. Quilt sizes aren't standardized, so check the exact size before you buy.

Twin quilt size

Twin quilts are 66–68 × 86–88 inches (168–173 × 218–224 cm). On a twin (38" × 75") they hang 14–15 inches over each side and 11–13 inches past the foot. On a twin XL, 5 inches longer, that drops to 6–8 inches at the foot.

Queen quilt size (and full)

Queen quilts are 90–92 × 88–95 inches (229–234 × 224–241 cm). All three brands sell one full/queen size. On a queen (60" × 80") they hang 15–16 inches over each side and 8–15 inches past the foot; on a full (54" wide) 18–19 inches over each side.

King quilt size

King quilts are 108–110 × 92–95 inches (274–279 × 234–241 cm), sold for both king and California king. On a king (76" × 80") they hang 16–17 inches over each side and 12–15 inches past the foot. A California king (72" × 84") is longer, which leaves 8–11 inches at the foot.

Crib and toddler quilt sizes

Toddler quilts are about 36–37 × 46–50 inches:

  • Pottery Barn Kids, Toddler quilt, comforter and duvet: 36 × 50 inches (91 × 127 cm)
  • Burt's Bees Baby, Reversible Baby Quilt: 37 × 46 inches (94 × 117 cm)

Crib batting is 45 × 60 inches at both batting makers below. The American Academy of Pediatrics lists quilts among the soft bedding to keep out of a baby's sleep area and says nothing but a fitted sheet should be in the crib for babies up to 1 year old. Keep a crib quilt out of the crib for that first year.

Quilt sizes for quilters: batting

Quilt patterns don't follow one size standard either. Batting makers sell precut batting in named sizes, which sets the largest quilt each package can fill:

Queen90 × 10890 × 108
King120 × 124120 × 120

The two makers agree on craft, crib, twin and queen. They differ on full (90" vs 81" wide) and king (120" × 124" vs 120" × 120").

What size quilt to make for your bed

Add twice the drop to the mattress width and one drop to its length, for the foot. For a 12-inch-deep mattress:

Smallest batting is the smallest precut size from either maker that is at least as big as the quilt in the "6 inches below" column, turned either way. The fit tool above does the same sum for any depth and drop.

How this works

  • Finished quilt sizes are copied from each brand's product page, as width × length in inches, under the brand's own size names. Toddler quilt sizes come from Pottery Barn Kids and Burt's Bees Baby.
  • Batting sizes are the precut package sizes The Warm Company and Pellon list for their batting.
  • Overhang and quilt-top sizes are our own arithmetic: (quilt width − mattress width) ÷ 2 over each side and quilt length − mattress length at the foot, with mattress sizes from our bed size chart. Centimeters are converted from inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and rounded.
