Comforter size chart

Comforters and duvet inserts, width × length. Each range runs from the smallest to the largest size that Brooklinen, Parachute, L.L.Bean, Coyuchi, IKEA and Tuft & Needle sell under that name.

King comforter size

King comforters are 102–116 × 86–98 inches (259–295 × 218–249 cm). On a king mattress (76" × 80") they hang 13–20 inches over each side and 6–18 inches past the foot. The widest here is Tuft & Needle's 116 × 98 duvet insert; the shortest is IKEA's 102 × 86.

California king comforter size

Brands sell the same comforter for a king and a California king. Brooklinen, Parachute and Tuft & Needle label it king/California king; L.L.Bean, Coyuchi and IKEA list a king only. A California king is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a king (72" × 84"), so a king comforter hangs 15–22 inches over each side but only 2–14 inches past the foot. On a deep California king mattress, check the length.

Queen comforter size

Queen comforters are 86–98 × 86–98 inches (218–249 × 218–249 cm). Every brand here sells one full/queen size rather than a separate queen. On a queen (60" × 80") they hang 13–19 inches over each side and 6–18 inches past the foot.

Full comforter size

A full comforter is the same full/queen size, 86–98 × 86–98 inches. None of the 6 brands in our chart sell a full-only comforter. A full mattress is 6 inches narrower and 5 inches shorter than a queen, so the same comforter hangs 16–22 inches over each side of a full, against 13–19 on a queen.

Twin comforter size

Twin comforters are 60–70 × 86–92 inches (152–178 × 218–234 cm). Of these 7 sizes, 4 are sold as one twin/twin XL size. On a twin (38" × 75") they hang 11–16 inches over each side and 11–17 inches past the foot; a twin XL is 5 inches longer, which leaves 6–12 inches at the foot.

Can you use a king comforter on a queen bed?

Yes, if you want more drape. A king comforter on a queen hangs 21–28 inches over each side, against 13–19 inches for a full/queen. King and full/queen comforters come in the same range of lengths, so the extra fabric is all on the sides. Going the other way, a full/queen comforter on a king hangs only 5–11 inches over each side, short of the bottom of a 12-inch-deep mattress.

Duvet cover sizes

Duvet covers from Brooklinen, Parachute, Coyuchi and Pottery Barn are twin 64–70 × 86–92, full/queen 90–92 × 88–92 and king 106–108 × 90–94 inches. Brooklinen and Coyuchi list full and queen separately, but give both the same dimensions.

A cover and an insert with the same size name don't always match, even from the same brand. Full/queen sizes:

Compare the numbers before mixing brands. An insert much larger than its cover bunches up inside it; a much smaller one leaves the corners empty.

How this works

• Sizes are copied from each maker's own size chart or product page, as width × length in inches, under the size name the brand uses. Comforters and duvet inserts are listed together because brands use both names for the same thing. There is no industry standard for comforter sizes, so the chart gives the range across brands rather than a single number. Centimeters are converted from inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and rounded.
• Overhang is how far a comforter laid centered on the mattress, with its top edge at the head, reaches past each side ((comforter width − mattress width) ÷ 2) and past the foot (comforter length − mattress length). Mattress sizes come from our bed size chart.
