"Needs" is the opening width × height: the refrigerator plus the side and top clearance its maker asks for, or the maker's cutout size. Space in front is checked against each model's depth with a door open 90°, plus the rear clearance. "Walls" checks the width with the doors open 90°, handles included. Door positions ignore handles.

What is the standard refrigerator size?

Samsung describes a standard refrigerator as 30 to 36 inches wide, 67 to 70 inches tall and 29 to 35 inches deep. The full-size models here, from 28 to 36 inches wide, fall close to that: 64 3/4" to 72" tall to the top of the hinge and 28 3/4" to 37 1/2" deep with the handles. Top freezers are 64 3/4" to 69" tall, mostly below that range, and standard-depth French door and bottom-freezer models run deeper, up to 37 1/2" with the handles. Whirlpool's sizing guide gives a wider range that takes in narrow and tall models: 24 to 40 inches wide, 61 to 72 inches tall and 28 to 37 inches deep.

The most common width for a French door or side-by-side refrigerator is 36 inches. Every 36-inch model here is 35 5/8" to 35 7/8" wide. GE and LG ask for 1/8 inch on each side, so their 36-inch models fill a 36-inch opening exactly. Not every 36-inch model does: with its maker's side clearance, the Whirlpool WRS325SDHZ needs 36 7/8".

How wide is a refrigerator?

Refrigerators are sold by nominal width. The case is a little narrower than the name, and the opening should be at least as wide as the name.

WidthActual widthOpening neededCapacityStyles
24" or narrower21 7/8" to 23 1/2"25 7/8" to 27 1/2"8.6 to 12 cu ftbottom freezer, top freezer

36"35 5/8" to 35 7/8"36" to 36 7/8"20.5 to 28.6 cu ftFrench door, side-by-side

"Opening needed" adds the side clearance from each maker's installation specs. GE and LG ask for 1/8 inch per side on most models, Whirlpool and KitchenAid for 3/16 to 1/2 inch, and LG for 2 inches on each side of its top freezers, so a 30-inch LG top freezer needs a 34-inch opening. The standard refrigerator width for a replacement is whatever your opening is: measure it rather than the old fridge.

Counter-depth refrigerator dimensions

A counter-depth refrigerator has a shallower case, so the doors sit close to the front of the counters instead of several inches past them. Samsung puts counter-depth models at 24 to 25 inches deep and standard-depth models at 27 to 31 inches, both measured without the doors and handles. Whirlpool's guide, measuring to the front, puts counter-depth at 24 to 30 inches and standard depth at 30 to 37. The full-size models here (28 inches wide and up) agree:

Case depthWith doors and handlesCapacity
Standard depth (23 models)26 3/4" to 30 5/8"32 5/8" to 37 1/2"16.6 to 28.6 cu ft
Counter depth (8 models)23 7/8" to 25"28 3/4" to 31 5/8"18.6 to 26.5 cu ft

Counter depth does not mean flush. On the counter-depth models here the doors add 3 1/8" to 5 3/8" to the case depth and the handles another 0" to 2 5/8", so the doors still stand a few inches past the counters. Samsung says standard-depth models usually extend about 6 inches beyond the counter edge. The Bosch B36CL80ENS, with recessed handles, is 28 3/4" deep with its doors on a 24" case, and Bosch lists a required cutout 25" deep, which it says includes the 1 inch of airflow space behind it.

The trade-off is space. GE's 36-inch GNE27JYMFS holds 27 cu ft in a 29"-deep case; its counter-depth GYE22GYNFS holds 22.1 cu ft in 24 3/8". Fully built-in refrigerators are shallower still: the Department of Energy defines a built-in model as one 24 inches deep or less, not counting doors and handles, designed to be enclosed by cabinetry.

How deep is a refrigerator?

Spec sheets list several depths, and which one matters depends on what you are checking:

  • Case depth (without doors): 21 3/4" to 30 5/8" on the models here. Use it with the doors removed to get through a narrow doorway.
  • Depth without handles:27" to 35". GE says this is the depth to compare with your space.
  • Overall depth, with handles: 25 1/8" to 37 1/2".
  • Depth with a door open 90°:42" to 65 1/8", measured from the back of the case. Bottom-freezer and top-freezer models have the widest single doors and need the most room in front.

Add the rear clearance (1 to 2 inches) to each. The refrigerator depth that fits your kitchen is the space from the wall to the counter edge if you want it near flush, or to the nearest island or wall if you don't mind it standing out.

How tall is a refrigerator?

Full-size refrigerators here are 64 3/4" to 72" (164 to 183 cm) to the top of the hinge, which is the tallest point on most models. Top freezers are the shortest, from 64 3/4" to 69". Most French door, side-by-side and bottom-freezer models are close to 70 inches; the tallest here are the Bosch B36CL80ENS at 72" and LG's 24-inch LRBCC1204S at 73 1/4". Add the top clearance, 1 inch on most GE and LG models, 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches on Whirlpool and KitchenAid models, and 2 inches on LG's top freezers and narrow bottom freezer and on GE's compact models, before comparing with the space under a cabinet.

How much clearance does a refrigerator need?

The installation clearances makers publish for these models, for air flow and to slide the fridge in and out:

GE's sizing guide adds two rules of thumb: leave at least 1 inch at the top and back, and about 2 inches on the hinge side so the door can swing open, or pull the fridge forward a little. Whirlpool's and KitchenAid's manuals give a minimum gap between the refrigerator and a fixed wall so the doors can swing open: 2" for the Whirlpool WRF560SEHZ, 2" for the Whirlpool WRS325SDHZ, 2 1/2" for the Whirlpool WRFF5333PV, 3 3/4" for the Whirlpool WRFC5036RW, 14" for the KitchenAid KRFC704FBS. Frigidaire's spec sheet for the FRTD2021AW and Danby's page for the DCR016A3BDB list no clearance, so check their installation guides.

Door swing clearance

Doors need room in front and, next to a wall, to the side. From the back wall, a door open 90° reaches:

StyleWall to front of open doorWidth with doors open 90°
French door44" to 52 5/8"37 7/8" to 44 5/8"4 1/4" to 8 7/8" wider than the case
Side-by-side48" to 52 1/2"41 3/8" to 42 1/4"5 5/8" to 9 1/2" wider than the case
Bottom freezer50 3/16" to 67 1/8"23 13/16" to 36 7/8"5/16" to 4 1/8" wider than the case
Top freezer58" to 65 1/2"29 1/4" to 35 1/2"1 5/8" to 7 3/8" wider than the case

French door and side-by-side models split the width into two narrower doors, so they need less room in front than a single wide door; GE suggests them for spots next to a wall. To open the doors all the way rather than to 90°, GE's installation guide for the PVD28BYNFS asks for 13 3/4" between the case and a wall.

Mini fridge dimensions

The Department of Energy classes any refrigerator under 7.75 cubic feet as compact. The mini fridges here run from 1.6 to 5.6 cu ft:

ModelCapacityWidthHeightDepth
Danby DCR016A3BDB1.6 cu ft17 11/16"19 3/4"18 1/2"
GE GDE03GLKLB3.1 cu ft18 3/4"33 3/8"20 1/8"

GE GCE06GSHSB5.6 cu ft23 5/8"34 1/8"23 3/4"

The 1.6 cu ft Danby is under 20 inches in every direction; the 3 to 6 cu ft models are 33 3/8" to 34 1/8" tall. GE asks for 1/2 inch at the sides and 2 inches at the top and back of its GDE03GLKLB and GME04GLKLB, so measure an under-counter spot with that space added.

What size refrigerator do I need?

Two makers' guidance on capacity by household:

HouseholdGE AppliancesSamsung (Canada)

3 to 4 people18 to 25 cu ft20 to 26 cu ft
5 or more, or you host often25 cu ft or more—

GE adds that buying in bulk, meal prepping or hosting often calls for more. Capacity is the volume inside in cubic feet, so it tracks width: 28-inch models hold 16.6 to 17.5 cu ft, 30-inch models hold 19.2 to 20.9 cu ft, 33-inch models hold 18.6 to 25.5 cu ft, 36-inch models hold 20.5 to 28.6 cu ft. If your opening is fixed, the checker above shows the largest capacity that fits it.

How to measure for a refrigerator

  1. Measure the opening: width at the narrowest point between cabinets, height from the floor to the underside of the cabinet above, and depth from the wall to the front edge of the counter.
  2. Compare with the right figures: GE says to use the height to the top of the hinge, the width, and the depth without the handle, then add the clearance.
  3. Check door swing: the distance to an island or opposite wall, and whether a wall beside the fridge will stop a door.
  4. Measure the path in. GE's PVD28BYNFS needs a 37 1/8-inch doorway with doors and handles on, 34 9/16 inches with the handles off, 32 1/4 inches with the doors off and 29 3/4 inches with the center hinge removed as well.

Refrigerator dimensions by width

Our refrigerator picks

How this works

  • Dimensions are each maker's published specifications for current models, checked October 7, 2026. Ranges are the smallest and largest of the models on this page, not every refrigerator sold. Height is to the top of the hinge or door, whichever the maker lists higher.
  • The fit checker adds each model's side and top clearance to its width and height (or uses the maker's cutout size) and compares the result with your opening. With "Walls" selected it also needs the width with the doors open 90° to fit. Space in front is compared with the depth with a door open 90° plus the rear clearance. Models without a published clearance are checked against their bare size.
  • Centimeters are converted from inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and rounded.
