Most cooked leftovers last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. Raw chicken and ground beef last only 1 to 2 days, while eggs in the shell keep 3 to 5 weeks. This chart lists fridge, freezer, and pantry times for 661 foods from the USDA's FoodKeeper data, the same numbers behind the government's FoodKeeper app.
The rules that apply to everything
- Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F.
- Refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours of cooking or buying, or within 1 hour when it's above 90°F.
- Cooked leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge.
- Frozen food stays safe indefinitely at 0°F. Freezer times are for quality, not safety.
- You can't smell food poisoning bacteria. When a food is past its time, throw it out.

How long does food last in the fridge without power?
A refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power if you keep the door closed. A full freezer holds its temperature for about48 hours, or 24 hours if it's half full.
After 4 hours without power, the USDA says to throw out refrigerated meat, poultry, fish, eggs, leftovers, deli meat, soft cheeses, milk, and cooked pasta and rice. More generally, discard any perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours. Frozen food that still has ice crystals, or that stayed at 40°F or below, can be refrozen.
An appliance thermometer in both the fridge and the freezer tells you right away whether food stayed cold enough.
