How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?

About 95 mg in an 8 fl oz (237 mL) cup of brewed coffee, or about 12 mg per fluid ounce. That is USDA FoodData Central's average for brewed coffee (FDC ID 171890), which covers both home-brewed and fast food coffee. A 12 oz mug comes to about 142 mg.

Cups vary. USDA's 8 lab samples ranged from 30 to 44 mg per 100 g, which is 71 to 104 mg in an 8 oz cup. The FDA puts a typical 12 oz cup of regular, non-specialty brewed coffee at 113 to 247 mg. More coffee per cup of water means more caffeine, so a stronger ratio from our coffee ratio calculator gives a stronger cup in both senses.

Cup sizeBrewed coffeeInstant coffeeDecaf brewed
6 fl oz177 mL71 mg46 mg2 mg
8 fl oz237 mL95 mg62 mg2 mg
10 fl oz296 mL118 mg77 mg3 mg
12 fl oz355 mL142 mg93 mg4 mg
16 fl oz473 mL189 mg124 mg5 mg
20 fl oz591 mL237 mg155 mg6 mg

By brew method, USDA separates only brewed (drip) coffee, espresso and instant coffee. Instant has about two thirds the caffeine of brewed, at 62 mg per 8 oz (FDC ID 174130). There is no USDA entry for French press, pour over or cold brew, so we don't give separate numbers for them; the cold brew figures below are Starbucks' own.

Coffee-shop cups run far stronger and larger. Starbucks lists a Grande (16 fl oz) Pike Place at 315–390 mg, about 20 to 24 mg per ounce, against USDA's 12. Brewing at home? See our coffee maker picks, such as the OXO Brew 9-Cup.

How much caffeine is in a shot of espresso?

About 63 mg in a 1 fl oz single shot and 126 mg in a 2 fl oz double, by USDA's figure of 212 mg per 100 g for restaurant-prepared espresso (FDC ID 171891). Starbucks lists 75 mg for its 0.75 fl oz Solo and 150 mg for a Doppio.

Starbucks Solo0.75 fl oz75 mg100
Starbucks Doppio1.5 fl oz150 mg100
Starbucks Triple2.25 fl oz225 mg100
Starbucks Quad3 fl oz300 mg100

Per ounce, espresso has about five times the caffeine of drip coffee (63 mg against 12 mg). Per serving, an 8 oz cup of drip (95 mg) beats a single shot (63 mg), and a double (126 mg) beats the cup. Espresso drinks carry only the shots in them: a Starbucks Grande latte has two shots and 150 mg. Our espresso vs. coffee guide covers taste and brewing, and our home espresso machine picks include the Gaggia Classic Pro.

Caffeine in Starbucks coffee by size

From each drink's nutrition page on starbucks.com, checked October 19, 2026. Starbucks gives brewed coffee as a range ("Caffeine is an approximate value"); Blonde and Dark Roast list the same figures as Pike Place. Hot drinks: Short 8, Tall 12, Grande 16, Venti 20 fl oz. Iced Venti is 24 fl oz.

A Grande brewed coffee alone is 315 to 390 mg, close to the FDA's 400 mg for the whole day. A Venti (up to 490 mg) can pass it.

How much caffeine is in cold brew?

Starbucks lists 205 mg for a Grande (16 fl oz) Cold Brew, 13 mg per ounce. That is less than its Grande hot brewed coffee (315–390 mg) but more than USDA's average drip coffee. Nitro Cold Brew is stronger at 280 mg for a Grande, and Iced Coffee has 185 mg.

Starbucks Cold BrewCaffeine
Tall (12 fl oz)155 mg
Grande (16 fl oz)205 mg
Venti (24 fl oz)310 mg
Trenta (30 fl oz)360 mg

Starbucks' bottled Cold Brew Black Unsweet, made by PepsiCo, lists 255 mg per 12 fl oz serving. Homemade cold brew has no standard strength: it depends on how much coffee you steep and whether you dilute the concentrate. Our coffee ratio calculator has the cold brew ratios, and our coffee maker guide covers the OXO cold brew maker.

How much caffeine is in tea?

About 47 mg in an 8 oz cup of brewed black tea and 28 mg in green tea, by USDA's averages. That is about half the caffeine of brewed coffee for black tea and under a third for green. The FDA's typical figures for a 12 oz cup are 71 mg for black tea and 37 mg for green.

Brewing time, leaf amount and the tea itself all change the number; USDA's green tea samples ranged from 8 to 18 mg per 100 g. Herbal teas made without tea leaves have none, but blends with green or black tea, yerba mate or guarana do.

USDA has no entry for matcha. Starbucks lists 65 mg for a Grande Matcha Latte and 55 mg for a Grande Chai Latte. Bottled Pure Leaf Unsweetened Black Tea has 54 mg in an 18.5 fl oz bottle, per PepsiCo.

How much caffeine is in Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi and Mountain Dew?

A 12 oz can of Coca-Cola has 34 mg of caffeine, Diet Coke has 46 mg and Coke Zero Sugar 34 mg, according to Coca-Cola. Pepsi has 38 mg and Mountain Dew 54 mg per 12 oz can, per PepsiCo. A can of Diet Coke has about half the caffeine of an 8 oz cup of coffee. The FDA's typical range for a 12 oz caffeinated soft drink is 23 to 83 mg.

Diet Coke has more caffeine than regular Coke, and Mountain Dew Zero Sugar (68 mg per 12 oz) more than regular Mountain Dew. Coca-Cola Caffeine Free and Caffeine Free Diet Coke have none.

How much caffeine is in Red Bull, Monster and Celsius?

An 8.4 oz can of Red Bull has 80 mg of caffeine and a 12 oz can 114 mg, per Red Bull. A 16 oz Monster Energy has 160 mg, per Monster, and a 12 oz CELSIUS 200 mg, per CELSIUS. The FDA says energy drinks generally have 54 to 328 mg per 16 fl oz.

Per ounce, Red Bull (9.5 mg) and Monster (10 mg) are close to brewed coffee; CELSIUS (17 mg) is stronger. CELSIUS itself recommends no more than two 12 oz cans a day. 5-hour ENERGY does not publish a milligram figure on its site; it says a Regular Strength shot has about as much caffeine as 8 ounces of "the leading premium coffee", and Extra Strength about as much as 12 ounces.

How much caffeine is too much?

For most healthy adults, the FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, which it describes as about two to three 12 oz cups of coffee. The European Food Safety Authority uses the same 400 mg a day (about 5.7 mg per kg of body weight) and adds that single doses up to 200 mg, about 3 mg per kg, raise no safety concerns.

Here is how many of each drink add up to 400 mg:

  • Sensitivity varies. The FDA notes wide differences in how sensitive people are to caffeine and how fast they clear it, and that some conditions and medications make people more sensitive.
  • Pregnancy. ACOG's committee opinion describes moderate consumption as less than 200 mg a day, and EFSA uses the same 200 mg. The FDA recommends talking to your health care provider if you're pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Children and teens. The FDA cites the Dietary Guidelines for Americans that drinks with caffeine should be avoided for children under 2, and the American Academy of Pediatrics' advice against energy drinks for children and teens.
  • Pure caffeine. The FDA estimates that toxic effects such as seizures can come from rapidly taking in around 1,200 mg, less than half a teaspoon of pure caffeine powder.
  • Decaf isn't zero. The FDA says decaf coffee typically has 2 to 15 mg per 8 oz cup; Starbucks lists 25 mg for a Grande decaf.

This page is a kitchen reference for what's in your cup, not medical advice. If you're pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor how much caffeine is right for you.

How this calculator works

  • Coffee and tea use USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy values: caffeine in mg per 100 g, times the gram weight USDA lists for 1 fl oz (29.6 g for brewed coffee and tea), times the cup size. For example, 40 mg per 100 g × 29.6 g × 8 fl oz = 95 mg. USDA lists no ounce weight for oolong, so we use the same 29.6 g.
  • Branded drinks use the figure the maker publishes for that exact size. We don't scale a 12 oz figure up to other sizes; sizes a maker doesn't list aren't offered. Recipes change, so check the label for the current number.
  • Ranges. Starbucks gives brewed coffee as a range, so the calculator shows a low and high total when you add it.
  • Your cup may differ. USDA values are averages of lab samples, and the caffeine in coffee and tea changes with the beans or leaves, the amount used and the brewing time.

Dunkin' doesn't list caffeine in its nutrition guide (checked October 19, 2026), so its drinks aren't included.
