How big is a 55-inch TV?

TV sizes are measured diagonally across the visible screen, corner to corner, without the frame. "55-inch" is a size class: the models here measure 54.6" diagonally. A 16:9 screen with an exact 55" diagonal is 47.9" wide and 27.0" tall; the frame adds a fraction of an inch on each side, and the stand adds height and depth.

How far should you sit from a 55-inch TV?

  • Immersive, 5' 6" (1.7 m): the screen fills 40° of your view, the angle THX recommends for the best seat.
  • Comfortable, 7' 5" (2.3 m): the screen fills 30°, the widely cited SMPTE minimum. Most living-room seats work anywhere between the two.
  • 4K vs 1080p: closer than about 7' 2", 20/20 vision can see the extra detail of 4K. Much farther back, a 4K and a 1080p picture of this size look nearly the same.

How high to mount a 55-inch TV

Put the center of the screen at seated eye level, about 42" from the floor on a typical sofa. For a 55-inch TV that puts the bottom edge of the screen near 29" and the top edge near 55". Measure your own eye height from your usual seat: recliners sit lower, bar-height seating higher.

What size TV stand does a 55-inch TV need?

The TV itself is 48.1" to 48.5" wide, but the stand is what rests on the furniture. On the models here the stand or feet need 15.3" to 42.6" of surface. Many 55-inch TVs use feet near the outer edges, so check the stand width of the exact model before buying a console narrower than the TV.

Will a 55-inch TV fit in a car?

Measure for the box, not the TV. A 55-inch box is 53.3" to 57.0" long, 31.5" to 33.7" tall and 6.3" to 7.3" deep, and weighs 48.9 to 63.9 lb. Compare it with your cargo area's length with the seats folded and the height of the hatch opening, which is usually the tighter limit.

What to know before buying a 55-inch TV

  • Stands vary: LG and Samsung use a center pedestal (18.5" and 15.3" wide), while Sony's feet sit 42.6" apart, or 17.2" in the narrow position.
  • Mounting patterns differ more than the size suggests: VESA 200 × 200 on the Samsung, 300 × 200 on the LG, 300 × 300 on the Sony and 400 × 300 on the Hisense.
  • 55 inches is the smallest size of the Hisense U8N. LG's C5 and Samsung's QN90F also come in 42 to 48 and 43 to 50 inches.
