A 50-inch TV has a screen about 43.6" wide and 24.5" tall (111 cm × 62 cm). With the frame, the five 50-inch models below measure 43.7" to 44.3" wide and 25.4" to 25.7" tall without the stand. Sit about 5' to 6' 9" away, and wall-mount it with the bottom edge near 30" from the floor.

How big is a 50-inch TV?

TV sizes are measured diagonally across the visible screen, corner to corner, without the frame. "50-inch" is a size class: the models here measure 49.5" diagonally. A 16:9 screen with an exact 50" diagonal is 43.6" wide and 24.5" tall; the frame adds a fraction of an inch on each side, and the stand adds height and depth.

How far should you sit from a 50-inch TV?

  • Immersive, 5' (1.5 m): the screen fills 40° of your view, the angle THX recommends for the best seat.
  • Comfortable, 6' 9" (2.1 m): the screen fills 30°, the widely cited SMPTE minimum. Most living-room seats work anywhere between the two.
  • 4K vs 1080p: closer than about 6' 6", 20/20 vision can see the extra detail of 4K. Much farther back, a 4K and a 1080p picture of this size look nearly the same.

How high to mount a 50-inch TV

Put the center of the screen at seated eye level, about 42" from the floor on a typical sofa. For a 50-inch TV that puts the bottom edge of the screen near 30" and the top edge near 54". Measure your own eye height from your usual seat: recliners sit lower, bar-height seating higher.

What size TV stand does a 50-inch TV need?

The TV itself is 43.7" to 44.3" wide, but the stand is what rests on the furniture. On the models here the stand or feet need 20.4" to 43.3" of surface. Many 50-inch TVs use feet near the outer edges, so check the stand width of the exact model before buying a console narrower than the TV.

Will a 50-inch TV fit in a car?

Measure for the box, not the TV. A 50-inch box is 47.8" to 51.9" long, 29.9" to 30.9" tall and 5.3" to 6.0" deep, and weighs 26.7 to 47.4 lb. Compare it with your cargo area's length with the seats folded and the height of the hatch opening, which is usually the tighter limit.

What to know before buying a 50-inch TV

  • OLED skips 50 inches: the LG C5 jumps from 48 to 55. Most mini-LED lines start at 55 too, including the TCL QM6K and Amazon's Ember Mini-LED. Samsung's QN90F is an exception and comes in 50 inches.
  • Feet placement varies widely. Amazon's Ember QLED stands on legs 43.3" apart, nearly the full width of the TV, while Samsung uses a 20.4"-wide center pedestal and Sony's stand needs about 28".
  • Mounting patterns split two ways at this size: VESA 200 × 200 on the Samsung, Sony and LG, and 300 × 300 on the TCL and Amazon.
  • Every model here except LG lists a 49.5" measured diagonal; LG lists only the 50" class size.
