A wallet size photo is 2.5 × 3.5 inches (6.4 × 8.9 cm) at Mpix, Shutterfly and Nations Photo Lab. Walgreens and Lifetouch print a smaller 2 × 3 inches (5.1 × 7.6 cm). At 300 PPI a 2.5 × 3.5 wallet needs 750 × 1,050 pixels and a 2 × 3 needs 600 × 900.
Is a wallet photo 2.5 × 3.5 or 2 × 3?
Both are sold as wallets. Check the lab before you order, and check the slot it has to fit: a 2.5 × 3.5 print is 0.5 inch wider and taller than a 2 × 3.

How many wallet photos fit on a sheet?
Wallets usually come several to a sheet: CVS prints them on a 4 × 6 sheet. Four 2 × 3 wallets fill a 4 × 6 sheet, two across and two down. Four 2.5 × 3.5 wallets fill a 5 × 7 sheet the same way. Mpix sells 2.5 × 3.5 wallets in sets of 4, and Nations in sheets of 4, 8 or 16. To print them yourself, lay four copies on a 4 × 6 or 5 × 7 page in your printer's layout software and trim along the edges.
Wallet photo size in pixels
Pixels = inches × PPI (pixels per inch). The 2.5 × 3.5 wallet at common resolutions, with the 2 × 3 wallet alongside:

Mpix lists 625 × 875 as optimal and 250 × 350 as the minimum for its wallets. A 12-megapixel photo (4,000 × 3,000 pixels) works out to 1143 PPI at this size, so resolution is rarely the limit; uploading the original file matters more. Mpix warns that photos saved from texts or social media are compressed and may not print well.
Wallet photo aspect ratio and cropping
A 2.5 × 3.5 wallet is 5:7, the same shape as a 5 × 7 print, so a photo cropped for one fits the other. A 2 × 3 wallet is 2:3, the shape of a 4 × 6. Share of the photo trimmed off to fill the print:

Cropped is how much of the photo is trimmed to fill that size with no white border. Best: 300 PPI or more, Shutterfly's recommendation. Optimal: 250+, Mpix's optimal. Good: 125+, where Nations Photo Lab says images print well. Minimum: 100+, Mpix's minimum.
Printing wallet size photos at home
Print wallets four to a 4 × 6 or 5 × 7 sheet and cut them apart. Canon's PIXMA PRO-200S lists 4 × 6, 5 × 7, 8 × 10 and Letter among its paper sizes and prints borderless up to 13 × 19 inches. See our photo printer picks.
