Pixels = inches × PPI (pixels per inch). The 4x6 at common resolutions:

Shutterfly recommends 1,200 × 1,800 for a 4x6. Mpix lists 1,000 × 1,500 as optimal and 400 × 600 as the minimum. A 12-megapixel photo (4,000 × 3,000 pixels) works out to 667 PPI at this size, so resolution is rarely the limit; uploading the original file matters more. Mpix warns that photos saved from texts or social media are compressed and may not print well.

4x6 aspect ratio and cropping

4 × 6 is 2:3, the same shape as a 3:2 photo turned upright. Sony's α7 IV, for example, records 7,008 × 4,672 pixels at 3:2, which prints on 4 × 6 with nothing cut off. The iPhone Camera app shoots 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9, none of which match, so iPhone photos lose an edge on a 4 × 6. Share of the photo trimmed off to fill the print:

Photo shape4 × 6 print
3:2 (Sony α7 IV, Fujifilm X-T5)None
4:3 (iPhone, Micro Four Thirds)11%
16:9 (HD video frame)16%
1:1 (square)33%

What frame fits a 4x6 photo?

A 4x6 frame: frames are named for the opening, and Frame USA lists 4x6 as one of its standard sizes. To mat it, Frame USA puts three 4x6 prints in a 10 × 20 frame, with a mat opening of 3.5 × 5.5 inches each.

Mat openings are cut a quarter inch inside the print on each side so it doesn't fall through. More frame and mat sizes are on the photo size chart.

Cropped is how much of the photo is trimmed to fill that size with no white border. Best: 300 PPI or more, Shutterfly's recommendation. Optimal: 250+, Mpix's optimal. Good: 125+, where Nations Photo Lab says images print well. Minimum: 100+, Mpix's minimum.

You can print a 4x6 at home on 4x6 photo paper. Canon's PIXMA PRO-200S lists 4 × 6, 5 × 7, 8 × 10 and Letter among its paper sizes and prints borderless up to 13 × 19 inches. See our photo printer picks.
