Pixels to Inches Converter

Updated October 19, 2026

Pixels have no fixed size: how many inches they cover depends on the resolution, in pixels per inch (PPI). Convert pixels to inches or centimeters, inches to pixels, or find the PPI of a print.

Find

1,200 pixels at 300 PPI is 4 inches.

How to convert pixels to inches

  • Inches = pixels ÷ PPI. 1,800 pixels at 300 PPI is 1,800 ÷ 300 = 6 inches.
  • Pixels = inches × PPI. An 8-inch side at 300 PPI needs 8 × 300 = 2,400 pixels.
  • PPI = pixels ÷ inches. 3,000 pixels across 10 inches is 300 PPI.
  • Centimeters = inches × 2.54. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so pixels to cm is pixels ÷ PPI × 2.54.

Inches at four common resolutions: 72 PPI (one pixel per typographic point), 96 PPI (the CSS pixel used for web layouts), 150 PPI and 300 PPI, the resolution Shutterfly recommends for photo prints.

How many pixels are in an inch?

It depends on what you're measuring:

  • On a web page, 96. The CSS standard defines 1px as 1/96 inch and 1pt as 1/72 inch, so a 960px-wide image is laid out 10 "CSS inches" wide. Held up to a ruler on a real screen it rarely measures exactly 10 inches, because screens differ in pixel density.
  • On a screen, its pixel density. The iPhone 17's screen is 460 ppi. Dell's UltraSharp U3425WE has a 0.2325 mm pixel pitch, which is 25.4 ÷ 0.2325 = 109 pixels per inch.
  • On a print, whatever PPI you print at. Shutterfly recommends 300 PPI, Mpix calls 250 optimal and 100 its minimum, and Nations Photo Lab says 125 or more prints well.

PPI vs DPI: what's the difference?

PPI (pixels per inch) is how many image pixels fit in an inch of the print or screen. DPI (dots per inch) is how many ink dots a printer can place in an inch. They are different things: Canon's PIXMA PRO-200S prints at up to 4,800 × 2,400 dpi, using many tiny dots of ink to reproduce each image pixel, while photo labs ask for 100 to 300 pixels per inch in the photo itself.

The two terms are often swapped. When a print lab, a photo editor's "resolution" box or a form asks for a 300 DPI image, it means 300 pixels per inch at the printed size, which is what this converter calculates. Changing that number without resampling doesn't add detail; it only changes the size the image prints at. Shopping for a printer? See our photo printer picks.

Megapixels to print size

A megapixel is a million pixels. For a 3:2 photo, the largest print with no cropping:

MegapixelsPixels (3:2)At 300 PPIAt 150 PPI
12 MP4,243 × 2,82814.1 × 9.43 in28.3 × 18.9 in
16 MP4,899 × 3,26616.3 × 10.9 in32.7 × 21.8 in

61 MP9,566 × 6,37731.9 × 21.3 in63.8 × 42.5 in

Doubling megapixels makes each side only about 1.4 times longer, since print size grows with the square root of the pixel count. For a photo that isn't 3:2, or to see which standard sizes crop it, use the print size calculator or the aspect ratio calculator.

How this converter works

All conversions are arithmetic: inches = pixels ÷ PPI, 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, and CSS uses 96 pixels per inch. Pixel results are rounded to whole pixels, inches to two decimal places. The print quality note compares your PPI with the labs' published figures.
