An 8x10 photo is 8 × 10 inches: 20.3 × 25.4 cm, or 203.2 × 254 mm. It has a 4:5 aspect ratio and needs 2,400 × 3,000 pixels to print at 300 PPI. Mpix, Shutterfly, Walgreens, and Nations all sell it.
8x10 photo size in pixels
Pixels = inches × PPI (pixels per inch). The 8x10 at common resolutions:
| PPI | 8 × 10 in | Megapixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | 2,400 × 3,000 | 7.2 | Shutterfly recommended; Nations top column |
| 250 | 2,000 × 2,500 | 5 | Mpix optimal |
| 200 | 1,600 × 2,000 | 3.2 | |
| 180 | 1,440 × 1,800 | 2.6 | Nations middle column |
| 150 | 1,200 × 1,500 | 1.8 | |
| 125 | 1,000 × 1,250 | 1.3 | Nations: prints well from here |
| 100 | 800 × 1,000 | 0.8 | Mpix minimum |
| 72 | 576 × 720 | 0.4 | One pixel per point; below every lab minimum |
Shutterfly recommends 2,400 × 3,000 for an 8x10. Mpix lists 2,000 × 2,500 as optimal and 800 × 1,000 as the minimum. A 12-megapixel photo (4,000 × 3,000 pixels) works out to 375 PPI at this size, so resolution is rarely the limit; uploading the original file matters more. Mpix warns that photos saved from texts or social media are compressed and may not print well.
8x10 aspect ratio and cropping
8 × 10 is 4:5, squarer than a 3:2 or 4:3 photo. A 3:2 camera photo loses a sixth of its length to fill it, so crop it yourself before ordering and choose what goes. An 8 × 12 print keeps the whole 3:2 frame. Share of the photo trimmed off to fill the print:
| Photo shape | 8 × 10 print |
|---|---|
| 3:2 (Sony α7 IV, Fujifilm X-T5) | 17% |
| 4:3 (iPhone, Micro Four Thirds) | 6% |
| 16:9 (HD video frame) | 30% |
| 1:1 (square) | 20% |
Work out other sizes with the aspect ratio calculator.
What frame fits an 8x10 photo?
An 8x10 frame: frames are named for the opening, and Frame USA lists 8x10 as one of its standard sizes. To mat it, Frame USA puts an 8x10 in an 11 × 14 frame, with a mat opening of 7.5 × 9.5 inches. Going the other way, an 8x10 frame with a mat holds a 5 × 7 print through a 4.5 × 6.5-inch opening.
Mat openings are cut a quarter inch inside the print on each side so it doesn't fall through. More frame and mat sizes are on the photo size chart.
Is 8 × 10 the same as Letter paper?
No. Letter paper is 8.5 × 11 inches, half an inch wider and an inch taller. An 8 × 10 print fits on a Letter sheet with a border, and Mpix and Nations also sell 8.5 × 11 prints. The two shapes differ: 8 × 10 is 4:5 (0.80) and 8.5 × 11 is 17:22 (0.77).
