A good beginner 3D printer costs about $180 to $400 in 2026. That buys a fast, auto-calibrating machine like the Bambu Lab A1 mini ($219), the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE ($179 on sale), or the Elegoo Centauri 2 ($279). Mid-range enclosed printers that handle tougher materials cost $400 to $900, prosumer machines $1,200 to $2,200, and professional printers $2,600 to $9,000 or more.
The printer is only part of the cost. Plastic filament runs about $14 to $30 per kilogram, and a small print often costs less than a quarter in material. Electricity adds a couple of cents per hour.

Entry-Level 3D Printers: $179 to $400
This is where most people should start. Today’s cheap printers calibrate themselves, print fast, and work out of the box, which wasn’t true a few years ago.
| Printer | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Creality Ender-3 V3 SE | $179 (list $199) | Open-frame bed slinger; the cheapest way in |
| Bambu Lab A1 mini | $219 | Small build plate; very easy to use |
| Flashforge Adventurer 5M | $249 (list $399) | Open-frame |
| Elegoo Centauri 2 | $279 (list $299) | Enclosed CoreXY |
| Anycubic Kobra 4 | $279 (list $379) | Open-frame |
| Bambu Lab A1 | $299 | Full-size build plate version of the A1 mini |
| Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 | $349 (list $359) | Enclosed, prints tougher materials |
The trade-off at this price is mostly the frame. Open printers like the A1 and A1 mini can’t print materials like ABS and ASA well; Bambu lists them as “not recommended” for both. If you only print PLA and PETG, which covers most household projects, that doesn’t matter.
Best budget 3D printer
Bambu Lab A1 Mini
A compact, quiet, beginner-friendly printer that delivers reliable everyday results with little setup.
Mid-Range 3D Printers: $400 to $900
Spending more mainly gets you an enclosure, a bigger or faster machine, and the ability to print engineering materials.
| Printer | Price |
|---|---|
| Bambu Lab P1S | $399 |
| Creality K2 | $419 (list $549) |
| Creality K1C | $499 (list $559) |
| Bambu Lab P2S | $549 |
| Creality K2 Pro | $599 (list $849) |
| Bambu Lab X2D | $649 |
| Prusa MK4S kit / assembled | about $660 / $925 |
An enclosed printer holds heat for ABS and ASA, and some add filtration: Bambu says the P1S’s activated carbon filter is there because ABS is “prone to emitting odors and harmful gases.”
Best overall 3D printer
Bambu Lab P1S
A proven enclosed CoreXY printer with automatic calibration, fast output, and optional multicolor support.
Multicolor 3D Printers
Printing in several colors usually means adding a filament changer or buying a multi-toolhead printer:
- Add-on changers: Bambu’s AMS lite ($199) fits the A1 series, and the AMS 2 Pro ($299) fits its enclosed printers. Bundles save money: the A1 Combo is $399 and the P1S Combo is $549, $100 to $150 more than each printer alone.
- Built-in multicolor: the Anycubic Kobra X costs $299 (list $399) for four colors, and the Flashforge AD5X costs $349.
- Multiple toolheads: the Snapmaker U1 ($749, list $999) has four independent toolheads, which waste far less filament on color changes than single-nozzle systems.
Best multicolor 3D printer
Snapmaker U1
Four independent toolheads make multicolor and multi-material printing faster and far less wasteful.
Resin 3D Printers: $179 to $750
Resin (MSLA) printers cure liquid resin with light, producing much finer detail for miniatures, jewelry, and dental models.
| Printer | Price |
|---|---|
| Elegoo Mars 5 | $179 (list $225) |
| Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra | $279 (list $338) |
| Anycubic Photon Mono 4 Ultra | $299 |
| Elegoo Saturn 4 | $319 (list $399) |
| Anycubic Photon Mono M7 | $429 (list $519) |
| Formlabs Form Studio 1 | from $699 |
Resin printing has extra costs and safety needs. You’ll want a wash and cure station ($89 to $200 from Anycubic, Elegoo, and Formlabs), plus isopropyl alcohol for washing and nitrile gloves. Formlabs and Elegoo both say to work in a well-ventilated space and wear gloves and safety glasses when handling uncured resin.
Prosumer and Professional 3D Printers
| Printer | Price |
|---|---|
| Bambu Lab H2S | $1,199 (list $1,249) |
| Creality K2 Plus Combo | $1,199 (list $1,499) |
| Bambu Lab H2D | $1,549 (list $1,749) |
| Bambu Lab H2C AMS Combo | $2,199 |
| Formlabs Form 4 (Basic package) | $2,625 |
| UltiMaker S6 | $6,999 |
| UltiMaker S8 | from $8,999 |
Above $1,000, you’re paying for large build volumes, dual nozzles, higher temperatures for engineering plastics, and professional support and software. For home use, the jump from a $400 printer to a $1,500 one is much smaller than the price suggests.
Running Costs: Filament, Resin, and Electricity
Filament (1 kg spools):
| Material | Typical price per kg |
|---|---|
| PLA | $14 to $23 (Elegoo $13.99, Bambu $15.99 refill, Polymaker $18.99, Hatchbox $22.99); Prusament $29.99 |
| PETG | $14 to $26 (Bambu $13.99 refill, Elegoo $13.99, Polymaker $18.99) |
| TPU (flexible) | $18 to $50 (Elegoo $17.99, Bambu $38.99 to $41.99) |
Resin: Elegoo’s standard resin costs $18.99 per kilogram, or $71.99 for 5 kg. Formlabs’ Grey Resin costs $79 a liter, or about $65 a liter in a 5-liter bottle.
Electricity: Bambu Lab measures its A1 at about 95 watts and the P1S at about 105 watts while printing PLA. At the US average of 18.31 cents per kWh (EIA, July 2026), that’s under 2 cents an hour. Bambu’s larger H2D averages about 197 watts, or roughly 3.6 cents an hour. Our 3D printing cost calculator works out filament and electricity for any print.
Parts that wear out: nozzles and hotends ($10 to $50 for Bambu printers), build plates ($20 to $60), and filament-changer tubes and desiccant. Resin printers use up resin tanks: Formlabs’ Form 4 tank costs from $119 and is rated for about 75,000 layers.
Cheap, dependable PLA
Elegoo PLA Filament (1 kg)
A 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm PLA with ±0.02 mm tolerance, one of the cheapest well-rated filaments at about $14.
How Much Does a 3D Print Cost?
Less than you’d think. The classic 3DBenchy test boat takes about 11 to 13 grams of PLA in common slicer settings. At $15.99 per kilogram, that’s about 18 to 21 cents of filament, plus a fraction of a cent of electricity. Bigger prints scale up from there: a 200-gram part costs about $3 in PLA. Prusa says most of its users spend $25 to $50 a month on filament.
The real long-term cost is your time spent designing, tuning, and reprinting failures, not the plastic.
Hidden Costs to Budget For
- Multicolor: a filament changer adds $150 to $300.
- Enclosure and filtration for ABS and ASA on an open printer: Creality’s enclosures cost $60 to $104, and a dedicated air purifier from a printer maker can cost hundreds.
- Resin extras: a wash and cure station, IPA, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Storage: filament absorbs moisture, so a dry box or desiccant helps.
- Tariffs: Prusa says US orders have carried a 15% tariff on imported goods since August 7, 2025, which it includes in its prices.
Which 3D Printer Should You Buy?
- For a first printer, get the Bambu Lab A1 mini if small prints are fine, or the full-size A1 ($299) for bigger parts.
- For the best all-around printer, get the Bambu Lab P1S: enclosed, fast, and expandable to multicolor.
- For enclosed printing on a budget, the Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 costs about $350.
- For multicolor without the waste, the Snapmaker U1.

3D Printer Cost FAQ
How much is a good 3D printer for beginners?
About $200 to $400. The Bambu Lab A1 mini ($219) and A1 ($299) are the easiest to start with, and the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE is often under $200.
How much does it cost to run a 3D printer?
Typically a couple of cents an hour in electricity and $14 to $30 per kilogram of filament. A small print often costs under a dollar.
Is resin or filament cheaper?
Resin printers can be just as cheap to buy, but resin printing adds a wash and cure station, IPA, and gloves, and resin costs more per print. Filament printing is cheaper and simpler for most household projects.
Are 3D printers worth it?
If you’ll use one regularly for repairs, organizers, gifts, or hobbies, yes: the printer pays for itself quickly against buying small plastic parts. If you only need a few prints a year, an online printing service may be cheaper.
