Alaska Airlines personal item size

Alaska Airlines doesn't publish a maximum personal item size. The rule is that it fits under the seat in front of you. If you want a number to shop by, 18 x 14 x 8 inches is the most generous published limit among US airlines, and 17 x 10 x 8 inches fits all of them; under-seat space varies by plane.

Does Alaska Saver include a carry-on?

Yes.All fares, including Saver.

  • Saver fares include a free carry-on; Alaska says the carry-on allowance is the same as Main fares.
  • Saver passengers board last, and overhead bin space is first come, first served.

More Alaska carry-on rules

  • The 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit applies on all aircraft types and includes wheels and handles. The three sides together may not add up to more than 45 inches.
  • Alaska publishes no maximum size for the personal item. At least one of your two items should go under the seat, and you need to be able to lift your bag into the bin yourself.
  • Small musical instruments, fishing poles, paintings and art portfolios can count as your carry-on even if they exceed the standard size, as long as they can be stowed safely.
  • Coats, a pillow, food, reading material, child restraint seats, strollers, assistive devices and medication don't count toward the limit.

Is a backpack a Alaska personal item?

Alaska Airlines's examples don't mention backpacks, but its only rule is that the personal item fits under the seat in front of you. With no published size, a slim daypack that slides under the seat is the safe choice. Our travel backpack picks, by their makers' measurements:
