Thorogood Moc Toe Review: Quick Verdict

The 814-4200 is a good buy if you work on concrete, shop floors, or other flat, hard ground and want a boot that feels cushioned from the first wear. The removable shock-absorbing footbed and Poron insole make it more comfortable out of the box than leather-footbed heritage boots, and the Goodyear welt means a cobbler can replace the sole when it wears out.

Its limits come from the same design. The flat wedge sole has little grip in mud or on loose dirt and gravel slopes, and the boot is unlined and not waterproof. If your job requires a protective toe, you need the steel-toe 804-4200, not the 814-4200.

Construction: Welt, Sole, and Leather

Goodyear storm welt. The upper is stitched to a welt, and the welt is stitched to the sole, rather than the sole being glued on. A storm welt adds a raised strip around the edge where the upper meets the welt, which Thorogood says helps keep moisture out. Because the sole is stitched rather than cemented, Thorogood says you can resole the boots multiple times.

MAXWear Wedge outsole. The flat wedge runs heel to toe with no separate heel block. That’s comfortable on concrete because your whole foot lands on a flat surface, and it doesn’t pick up gravel the way a lug sole does. Thorogood lists it as slip-resistant and oil-resisting. The trade-off is a shallow tread that’s a poor match for mud, wet grass, and steep loose ground.

Leather. The 814-4200 uses Thorogood’s tobacco full-grain leather, a reddish brown oil-tanned leather that Thorogood sources from American hides. Oil-tanned leather sheds light rain, but it isn’t a waterproof membrane, though. In standing water or wet grass all day, your feet will get wet.

Underfoot. A removable Ultimate Shock Absorption footbed sits on a Poron comfort cushion insole, over a rubber midsole and a composite shank for arch support. Because the footbed is removable, you can swap in a custom orthotic.

Comfort and Break-In

The cushioned footbed is why the Thorogood is often recommended over heritage moc toes for long shifts. It feels padded from the first wear, while a leather-and-cork footbed like Red Wing’s takes weeks to mold to your foot.

The leather upper still needs some breaking in. Thorogood’s fit guide says some resistance in new boots is normal and that boots “give a little” as they break in. Wear new pairs for a few hours at a time before your first full shift.

Safety-Toe and Soft-Toe Versions

The moc toe stitching is a style, not protection. The 814-4200 has a soft toe. It carries an EH rating under ASTM F2892-18. Thorogood says its EH-rated soles and heels can withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute in testing. That’s secondary protection, not a substitute for staying away from live circuits.

If your employer requires safety footwear, buy the 804-4200. It’s the same 6-inch tobacco boot with a steel safety toe meeting ASTM F2413-18, plus the same EH rating, composite shank, footbed, and MAXWear Wedge. The style numbers differ by one digit, so check the number when ordering. Thorogood’s American Heritage line also includes waterproof and insulated styles if you work in wet or cold conditions.

Heights, Leathers, and Other Versions

Thorogood makes the American Heritage moc toe in many combinations. The most common are:

Thorogood also sells versions with a black wedge sole instead of the off-white one, such as the 6-inch tobacco 814-4188, and some with its MAXWear 90 outsole instead of the wedge, such as the 6-inch Trail Crazy Horse safety toe 804-4375.

The 8-inch 814-4201 adds ankle coverage. It’s sold in a narrower size run than the 6-inch: D and EE from 7 to 14.

Sizing and Width

Thorogood makes the 814-4200 in D (medium) sizes 5 to 15 and EE (wide) sizes 6 to 15, with half sizes through 12. Other versions have shorter runs. The 804-4200 steel toe, for example, comes in D and EE from 7 to 14.

Thorogood’s own sizing advice is to measure both feet from heel to longest toe, compare with its size chart, and size up for thick socks. In the boot, you should have about a finger’s width (roughly half an inch) between your longest toe and the end, and your heel should stay put as you walk. If your heel lifts with each step, the boots are too big.

Many owners say the Moc Toe runs large and go a half size down from their sneaker size, but that varies with foot shape. Try them on later in the day with the socks you work in. If you need a narrow or extra-wide boot, Thorogood’s two widths may not work for you. Red Wing offers the Classic Moc in four.

Resoling and Care

The Goodyear welt is what makes this a long-term boot. When the wedge wears thin, a cobbler can remove the old sole and stitch on a new one, as long as the upper and welt are still sound. Don’t wait until the wedge is worn through to the midsole.

Thorogood’s leather care guide recommends cleaning off dirt with warm soapy water and a brush, paying attention to the welt area, then conditioning the leather and letting the boots dry overnight. Boots worn in hot, dry weather or in rain and mud need it more often.

Thorogood’s one-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, but not normal sole wear. Buy from an authorized seller, since claims go back through the seller with your receipt.

Made in the USA

Weinbrenner says it sources most of its components domestically, including its leather hides, and uses some materials from global sources. That’s why the 814-4200 is labeled “Made in USA with USA and globally sourced components.” Final construction is done in Weinbrenner’s union factories in Wisconsin. Thorogood’s history also notes the company made the Official Boy Scout Boot, the Hike n’ Camp, in 1964.

Thorogood Moc Toe vs. Red Wing Classic Moc and Other Moc Toes

Red Wing Classic Moc 875. It’s the boot most people compare with the Thorogood. Red Wing lists it at $329.99, about $65 more. It uses Oro Legacy leather that develops a patina, a leather footbed over cork with a longer break-in, and Red Wing’s No. 23 last in four widths. It has no safety toe or hazard rating. Who Should Buy It (and Who Should Skip It)

Buy the Thorogood 814-4200 if you’re on your feet on concrete or shop floors, want a boot that’s comfortable without weeks of break-in, need an EH rating, and want a made-in-USA boot you can resole.

Buy the 804-4200 instead if your job requires a safety toe.

Skip both if you work in mud, on slopes, or in standing water. A lug sole and a waterproof boot will serve you better. And if you want a heritage boot mainly for its looks and how the leather ages, the Red Wing Classic Moc is the more traditional choice.

Final Verdict

The Thorogood American Heritage 6” Moc Toe earns its popularity. You get a Goodyear storm welt that can be resoled, a slip-resistant wedge sole, a cushioned footbed that’s comfortable early, an EH rating, and American leather and assembly. It costs less than the Red Wing Classic Moc and comes in steel-toe and 8-inch versions.

Its weak spots are traction on loose ground, water resistance, and the limited width options. If those don’t affect your work, it’s one of the best-value moc toe boots you can buy.
