Osprey Fairview & Farpoint
A one-bag travel backpack
These backpacks offer exceptional comfort, ample storage, and a detachable daypack.
The Osprey Fairview and the practically identical Farpoint are versatile travel backpacks designed to offer both carry-on convenience and checked-bag durability. Tailored for travelers with 15 to 19-inch torsos, the Fairview shares the same overall design and features as the Osprey Farpoint 55 but is sized for a different fit. The combination of a main pack and detachable daypack makes it well-suited for a variety of travel situations, from flights to overland journeys. When the daypack is removed, the main pack meets most airline carry-on requirements, while the daypack can serve as a personal item.
One of the Fairview 55’s strengths lies in its adaptability. For travelers who want to check their bag, the shoulder straps can be stowed behind a zippered panel, transforming the pack into a streamlined duffle with padded handles on both the top and side. This design reduces the risk of straps getting snagged during transit and provides a sturdy, compact form that is easier to handle in crowded spaces like train compartments and luggage holds.
The main pack features height-adjustable shoulder straps, allowing a customized fit that helps distribute weight effectively. Padding on the straps offers sufficient comfort for extended wear, even if it is slightly firmer than some alternatives. This adjustability ensures the pack can accommodate different body shapes while maintaining stability during movement, which is especially important for long days of travel.
The included daypack enhances the Fairview 55’s practicality. It is spacious enough to carry a 15-inch laptop and essential daily items, with two large mesh exterior pockets for water bottles. While it lacks an abundance of organizational compartments, its comfort and carrying capacity make it a strong companion for day trips. The top of the shoulder straps connect to form a durable grab handle, making it easy to maneuver when not worn.
Built from 450-denier recycled polyester, the Fairview 55 has a sturdy and durable feel, capable of withstanding frequent handling and various travel conditions. Both the main pack and daypack feature lockable zippers for added security, a welcome feature for travelers carrying valuables. Additionally, the Fairview offers a broader range of color options than many comparable packs, including black, green, red, and purple.
Osprey backs the Fairview 55 with its All Mighty Guarantee, which provides lifetime coverage for repairs or replacement in the event of damage or defects. The pack is also part of a broader product range, with smaller 40-liter versions for carry-on-only travelers and larger 70-liter versions for those who need additional capacity. This flexibility allows travelers to choose the size that best fits their packing style without sacrificing the core design benefits.
There are a few drawbacks to consider. The daypack’s U-shaped opening limits access to items at the bottom and may not accommodate bulky gear easily. The current attachment method, which uses compression straps rather than a full zipper, allows for more storage space but may feel less secure for those carrying expensive equipment. The Fairview also does not come with a rain cover, which must be purchased separately, and its padding is less plush than some competitors, trading cushioning for lighter weight and better breathability.
Despite these minor shortcomings, the Osprey Fairview 55 remains a well-rounded and dependable choice for travelers who want a carry-on-compatible backpack with a detachable daypack, solid build quality, and thoughtful design features. Its blend of durability, adjustability, and flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of trips, from weekend getaways to extended international travel.
