The difference between perfume and cologne is mostly about strength, and partly about marketing. Every fragrance is perfume oils dissolved in alcohol. The more oil in the bottle, the stronger the scent and the longer it lasts. Labels like parfum, eau de parfum (EDP), eau de toilette (EDT), and eau de cologne tell you roughly where a fragrance sits on that scale.

In the US, though, “cologne” usually just means a fragrance sold to men, whatever its strength. Dior calls Sauvage Eau de Toilette a “cologne for men,” and YSL calls both its Y Eau de Toilette and Y Eau de Parfum “cologne.” So a men’s “cologne” can be as strong as any women’s “perfume.”

The short answer: if you want a scent that lasts most of the day from a few sprays, buy an eau de parfum. If you want something lighter, cheaper per bottle, and easy to reapply, buy an eau de toilette. A true eau de cologne is the lightest of all and fades in about two hours. Ignore the men’s and women’s labels and buy the scent you like.

Fragrance strengths, strongest to lightest

SpecTypical oil concentrationHow long it lasts on skin
Parfum / extrait / elixirAbout 20% or more (Dior: elixirs are "typically above 20%")The longest; Dior says 10 to 14 hours for its elixirs
Eau de parfum (EDP)About 15% to 20% (Molton Brown: 20%; Creed: 18–20%)About 4 to 8 hours
Eau de toilette (EDT)About 8% to 12%About 2 to 4 hours, by most brands’ estimates
Eau de cologneAbout 3% to 6%About 2 hours
Body mist / eau fraîcheLightest; brands rarely publish a figureA short burst

These are typical ranges, not rules. There’s no legal standard for any of these names. The FDA regulates fragrance as a cosmetic but doesn’t define eau de parfum or eau de toilette, and the fragrance industry’s safety body, IFRA, puts every fine fragrance in one category. Brands set their own levels. Jo Malone says plainly that “there are no rules to classifying fragrances,” and even Creed lists different EDP percentages on different pages of its own site.

Where “Cologne” Came From

Eau de cologne is named after the German city of Cologne. The Farina perfume house there, founded in 1709, made a light, citrusy scent of bergamot and other citrus oils in alcohol and called it “Eau de Cologne.” It was worn by everyone. Germany’s patent and trademark office now treats “eau de cologne” as a generic term for a light fragrance with about 3% to 5% perfume oil.

The men’s meaning came later. Penhaligon’s explains that in the early 20th century, perfume houses used “cologne” for lighter concentrations, and the word drifted into being used almost only for scents marketed to men, while “parfum” signaled a fragrance for women. Today that’s purely marketing. Penhaligon’s itself says gender distinctions matter little now, Calvin Klein designed CK One “for men and women to share,” and Jo Malone says all of its scents are unisex, even though it calls every one of them a “cologne.”

Eau de Parfum vs. Eau de Toilette

This is the comparison most shoppers actually face, because many popular scents come in both.

Strength and longevity. An EDP has more perfume oil than an EDT, so it smells stronger and lasts longer. Penhaligon’s puts an EDP at about 4 to 5 hours and an EDT at about 2 to 4. Molton Brown says its EDPs last up to 8 hours and its EDTs about 3. Brands’ own numbers vary, and your skin, the weather, and the scent’s ingredients all change the result.

It’s often a different scent, not just a stronger one. Chanel says the parfum, EDP, and EDT of a fragrance “share the same olfactive identity,” but each formula contains variations. Dior’s Sauvage line is a good example:

Dior Sauvage100 mL price (Dior US)What’s different
Eau de Toilette$142Bergamot and ambroxan
Eau de Parfum$173Adds vanilla
Parfum$210Mandarin, tonka bean, and sandalwood
Elixir$265Spices and lavender

Bleu de Chanel follows the same price ladder at Chanel: $142 for the EDT, $173 for the EDP, and $210 for the parfum in 3.4 oz. YSL’s Y is $140 as an EDT and $170 as an EDP. So you typically pay about 20% more for the EDP, and about 50% more for the parfum.

Which to choose: if you love the EDT version of a scent, smell the EDP before buying it. It may be warmer or sweeter, not just stronger. If you want one bottle for everyday wear and hot weather, an EDT is easier to get right. If you want one or two sprays to last through a workday, an EDP is the better value per wear.

How Long Fragrance Lasts, and How to Make It Last Longer

A fragrance unfolds in stages. Penhaligon’s describes top notes that last a few minutes, heart notes that last 2 to 4 hours, and base notes that last 4 to 6 hours or more. That’s why a scent smells different an hour after you spray it, and why citrus-heavy fragrances fade fastest.

What helps, according to the brands:

  • Spray pulse points. Dior, Jo Malone, and Creed all point to the wrists, neck, and chest, where skin is warmest.
  • Apply to moisturized skin. Dior recommends moisturized pulse points, and Molton Brown says scent lasts longer on damp skin, so spray right after a shower.
  • Don’t rub your wrists together. Creed says to let the fragrance dry on its own.
  • Try your clothes. Chanel suggests spraying the inside or lining of clothing to keep the scent closer to its original form, but test delicate fabrics first, since perfume can stain.
  • Layer it. Many brands sell a matching shower gel and lotion that extend a scent.

How many sprays? Dior suggests 2 to 3 sprays of Sauvage EDP and just 1 to 2 of the stronger elixir. Light EDTs and colognes are meant to be used more freely: Calvin Klein says CK One is “intended to be used lavishly.”

Why you stop smelling it. After a while your nose gets used to your own scent. Chanel calls this habituation and notes that other people can still smell it, so resist adding more every hour.

Dior's most concentrated Sauvage, with spices, lavender, and woods. One or two sprays last all day.

Does Perfume Expire?

Yes, eventually. Molton Brown says most fragrances last about 3 to 5 years once opened, and Creed gives 2 to 5 years once you first spray a bottle. An unopened bottle stored well can last much longer. Molton Brown adds that EDTs keep a bit longer than EDPs because the extra alcohol acts as a preservative, and that citrus, fresh floral, and vanilla notes turn first. Signs a fragrance has gone off include a darker color, a sour or metallic smell, or liquid loss.

Store it cool, dark, and closed. Chanel calls heat, air, and light “the classic enemies of perfume.” Keep bottles capped, ideally in their box, in a drawer or closet. Creed and Molton Brown both say not to keep fragrance in the bathroom, where heat and humidity swing every day.

Fragrance and Sensitive Skin

Fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic skin reactions. The American Academy of Dermatology lists it alongside nickel as a leading cause of contact dermatitis. The FDA notes that companies can list a whole blend as simply “fragrance,” because formulas are trade secrets, and that there’s no federal definition of “fragrance-free” or “unscented.” If your skin reacts, spray your clothes instead of your skin, and look for named allergens like limonene, linalool, and citronellol on the ingredient list.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Buy an eau de parfum for office wear, evenings, and cooler weather, or if fragrance fades quickly on your skin.
  • Buy an eau de toilette for summer, the gym, and everyday wear, or for your first bottle of a new scent.
  • Buy a parfum or elixir if you want the most intense, longest-lasting version and plan to use only a spray or two.
  • Buy an eau de cologne or body mist for a quick, fresh burst you can reapply.

Perfume vs. Cologne FAQ

Is cologne just perfume for men?

In US marketing, mostly yes: “cologne” has become the word for fragrances sold to men. Technically, eau de cologne is the lightest fragrance strength and was originally worn by everyone.

Which lasts longer, perfume or cologne?

A parfum or eau de parfum lasts longer than an eau de toilette or eau de cologne, because it contains more perfume oil. A men’s “cologne” labeled eau de parfum lasts as long as a women’s eau de parfum.

Can women wear cologne and men wear perfume?

Yes. Fragrance isn’t gendered: Jo Malone designs all its scents to be unisex, and CK One was made to be shared. Wear what you like.

What does EDP and EDT mean?

EDP is eau de parfum and EDT is eau de toilette. An EDP is stronger and usually lasts longer; an EDT is lighter and usually cheaper.

Is eau de parfum worth the extra money?

Often, if you’d otherwise reapply. You typically pay about 20% more for the EDP version of a scent, and it lasts longer per spray. But since the formula can differ, smell both before deciding.
