An Apple Watch is a smartwatch first: an extension of your iPhone with apps, messages, calls, Apple Pay, and strong health and safety features, plus very good fitness tracking. A Garmin is a sports watch first: deep training and recovery data, accurate GPS, and battery life measured in days or weeks, with basic smart features on top.
The short answer: buy an Apple Watch Series 12 ($399) if you have an iPhone and want the best all-around smartwatch, and you don’t mind charging it every night. Buy a Garmin if you have an Android phone, you train seriously for running, cycling, or triathlon, or you want a watch you charge once every week or two. For most Garmin buyers, that’s the Venu 4 ($549.99) for everyday health and fitness or the Forerunner 570 ($549.99) for runners.

Best smartwatch for iPhone owners
Apple Watch Series 12
Apple's 2026 watch with a readiness score, sleep score, hypertension notifications, and 24-hour battery.
Best garmin for everyday health and fitness
Garmin Venu 4
A bright AMOLED Garmin with up to 12 days of battery, a flashlight, sleep coaching, and health status.
Battery Life
This is the biggest difference, and for many people it decides the question.
- Apple Watch Series 12: up to 24 hours, or 38 hours in Low Power Mode. It charges fast, to 80% in about 30 minutes, but you’ll charge it every day. If you track sleep, that means finding a time during the day to top it up.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4 ($799): up to 50 hours, or 84 in Low Power Mode. That’s two days, still far from Garmin.
- Garmin Venu 4: up to 12 days in the 45 mm size, 10 days in the 41 mm.
- Garmin Forerunner 570 and vivoactive 6: about 10 to 11 days.
- Garmin Fenix 9 ($999.99 and up): weeks, with solar models going longer.
A Garmin you charge on Sunday tracks every night of sleep and every workout through the following weekend. That makes Garmin much better for sleep tracking in practice, for multi-day trips, and for long races. A marathon or a long bike ride barely dents a Garmin, while GPS workouts drain an Apple Watch Series 12 in about 10 hours.
Fitness and Training
Garmin is the better training tool. Its watches are built around structured training and recovery:
- Training readiness and training status tell you whether to push or rest, based on sleep, HRV, recent load, and recovery.
- Body Battery estimates your energy through the day.
- Garmin Coach builds adaptive running and triathlon plans for free.
- Forerunner and Fenix models add race predictions, running power, detailed lap and interval control, and dual-frequency GPS for better accuracy among tall buildings and trees.
- Physical buttons work with sweaty fingers and gloves, and dedicated activity profiles cover everything from trail running to golf to strength training.
Apple has closed much of the gap. Watches running the current watchOS have training load, heart rate zones, custom interval workouts, Pacer, and a new Readiness feature that scores your capacity for the day from activity, vitals, and sleep, much like Garmin’s. Apple’s heart rate sensing is excellent, and the Series 12 checks heart rate in the background every five seconds. For gym workouts, classes, and casual running, an Apple Watch is all most people need. Serious runners and triathletes still tend to prefer Garmin for its depth, its buttons, and its battery.
Health and Safety Features
Both track heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen, skin temperature, sleep stages, sleep scores, and menstrual cycles, and both can take an ECG on supported models.
Apple goes further on medical-style alerts. The Series 12 has hypertension notifications, which watch for patterns that suggest high blood pressure, sleep apnea notifications, irregular rhythm notifications, and high and low heart rate alerts. It also has fall detection and crash detection, which can call emergency services automatically, and Emergency SOS, which works without your phone on cellular models.
Garmin’s health status flags when your heart rate, HRV, breathing, or skin temperature move outside your normal range, often a sign you’re getting sick or run down. Garmin has incident detection during certain activities and can send your location to emergency contacts through your phone, but it doesn’t offer anything like Apple’s hypertension or sleep apnea alerts.
Smart Features
Apple Watch wins easily. You can reply to messages by voice or keyboard, take calls, use thousands of apps, control your smart home, pay with Apple Pay almost anywhere, unlock your Mac, and, on cellular models, leave your phone at home entirely.
Garmin covers the basics: notifications, Garmin Pay, music storage on many models, and calls through your phone on models with a speaker and microphone, like the Venu 4 and Forerunner 570. Replying to texts with preset messages works only with Android phones. Garmin’s app store is small.
iPhone or Android?
An Apple Watch only works with an iPhone. If you use Android, the choice is made: get a Garmin, or look at Android watches like the Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch.
Garmin works with both iPhone and Android, which also means a Garmin goes with you if you switch phones.
Price and Subscriptions
| Watch | Price | Battery |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | From $249 | Up to 18 hours |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | From $399 | Up to 24 hours |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | From $799 | Up to 50 hours |
| Garmin vivoactive 6 | $299.99 | Up to 11 days |
| Garmin Venu 4 | $549.99 | Up to 12 days |
| Garmin Forerunner 570 | $549.99 | Up to 11 days |
| Garmin Fenix 9 | From $999.99 | Weeks |
Neither requires a subscription. Apple’s Fitness+ workout classes cost extra, and Garmin’s optional Connect+ ($6.99 a month) adds extra insights and coaching features, but every core feature is free on both. Compared with a Whoop band or Oura ring, that’s a real saving over a few years. See Whoop vs. Apple Watch and Oura vs. Whoop if you’re considering one of those instead.

Garmin vs. Apple Watch FAQ
Is Garmin or Apple Watch better for running?
Garmin, for most serious runners. Its Forerunner watches have more training and recovery data, free adaptive training plans, physical buttons, dual-frequency GPS, and enough battery for a marathon week after week. An Apple Watch is fine for casual and mid-distance running.
Is Garmin or Apple Watch more accurate?
Both are accurate for heart rate at rest and during steady exercise, and both use dual-frequency GPS on their higher-end models. Garmin’s sports watches give you more control over GPS settings, and Apple’s heart rate sensor is among the best in any wearable.
Can you use a Garmin with an iPhone?
Yes. Garmin watches work with both iPhone and Android through the Garmin Connect app. On an iPhone, you can see notifications and take calls on supported models, but you can’t reply to texts from the watch.
Can you use an Apple Watch with Android?
No. An Apple Watch needs an iPhone to set up and use.
Does Garmin need a subscription?
No. Every core Garmin feature is free. Garmin Connect+ ($6.99 a month) is optional and adds extra insights and coaching.
Which has better battery life, Garmin or Apple Watch?
Garmin, by a wide margin. Most Garmin watches last 10 days or more per charge, while the Apple Watch Series 12 lasts up to 24 hours and the Ultra 4 up to 50.
