Buy the Arctic 600 if you want one boot for winter walks, light snow hiking, and icy errands that’s warm while you’re moving, grips well on wet ice, and looks good in town. The side zip makes it easy to take on and off, and it’s light for an insulated boot.

Skip it if you’ll stand still for long periods in deep cold, such as ice fishing, hunting from a stand, or snowmobiling. 200 grams of insulation is moderate; for those uses, a boot with 400 to 800 grams is warmer. And if you want a boot you can resole for years, look elsewhere: Danner lists the Arctic 600 as not recraftable.

Traction on Snow and Ice

The outsole is the reason to buy this boot. Danner uses Vibram’s Nisqually Arctic Grip sole, which combines Vibram’s Arctic Grip rubber compound with flex lines and a split heel. Arctic Grip is designed to grip wet ice, the slick, partially melted surface that makes sidewalks and parking lots dangerous, without metal studs. Some colorways use Arctic Grip AT, a version made entirely of rubber, with no metal inserts.

Arctic Grip noticeably improves grip on wet ice compared with standard rubber soles, but it isn’t magic. Danner itself warns that it won’t prevent slipping on every surface and doesn’t replace crampons or traction spikes on steep, icy trails. It can also mark and damage indoor floors, so take the boots off at the door.

On snow and slush, the lugs are deep enough for packed trails and unplowed sidewalks.

How Warm Is 200 Grams of Insulation?

Insulation in boots is measured in grams per square meter. 200 grams is on the lighter side for winter boots, and that’s deliberate: it keeps the Arctic 600 warm while you’re moving without making it bulky or sweaty.

As a rough guide:

• 200g: active use in cold weather, such as winter hiking, walking, shoveling, and commuting.
• 400g: moderate activity in colder conditions, or longer periods outside.
• 800g and up: low activity in very cold weather, such as hunting from a stand or ice fishing.

Danner uses PrimaLoft Gold, a synthetic insulation that resists compression over time and stays warm when damp. Pair the boots with wool socks for the best warmth. If your feet run cold, or you’ll spend hours standing still, choose a boot with more insulation.

Waterproofing and Breathability

The Danner Dry liner is Danner’s own waterproof, breathable membrane. Danner calls it a 100% waterproof barrier that lets moisture escape. It keeps out snowmelt, slush, and puddles up to the height of the boot’s gusseted tongue.

The suede upper has a water-resistant finish, but suede soaks up water on the surface in wet conditions even when the liner keeps your feet dry. Treat it with a suede-safe waterproofing spray before the season and reapply as needed. Note that Danner says this style is made with PFAS chemicals, which are used for water repellency in many outdoor products.

The Side Zip

The Arctic 600 has both laces and a side zipper. Lace them once to get a snug fit, then use the zipper to get in and out. That’s handy when you’re constantly taking boots off at the door, for kids’ school drop-offs, or for travel through airport security.

Zippers are the part of any boot most likely to fail over time. Keep the zipper free of grit and salt, and don’t force it when the boot is frozen.

Comfort, Fit, and Sizing

The Arctic 600 uses Danner’s DPDX last, which has a lower-profile shape for everyday wear with room for comfort. Danner says it fits true to size and recommends sizing down a half size if you’re between sizes. Men’s sizes come in D (medium) and EE (wide) widths. If you plan to wear thick winter socks, try them on with those socks.

Cushioning comes from a Vibram SPE midsole, a rubberized EVA that cushions like standard EVA foam but resists breaking down, and a removable OrthoLite footbed. A nylon shank adds some stiffness for uneven terrain. At about 45 ounces per pair, it’s light for an insulated boot, which makes it comfortable for all-day wear and long walks.

Care and Warranty

• Brush off salt and mud after use, especially around the zipper.
• Let boots dry at room temperature, away from heaters and fireplaces.
